Red Rocks
An overnighter at Wellingtons south coast to spend time with grandad.
We headed to the coast early evening to secure a park, have dinner early and get Isaac settled in the bed (wasn't successful on that one). It was meant to be the three generations of boys for the over-nighter but we had an over-stayer. Kim was supposed to only join us for dinner, but as the evening went on she got more comfortable with the coziness of the bus so decided to crash the sleepover. We also had our dog Tui and my dads dog so we really tested the buses hosting ability.
Grandad took the dinette converted to bed which was a huge amount of effort to get it to fit together to form the bed—I'll need to do some adjustments for future use as the table doesn't fit in the frame/base anymore (required force). Update: I've since found the proper boards to make the bed base, turns out the table was never meant to form the bed base. Isaacs bunk bed doesn't have any safety guards yet so he slept between mum and dad.
I was a bit rushed getting prepared for the trip and managed to forget the main ingredient for our dinner, so it was Korma sauce and rice. To fancy it up I added chunks of apple, amazingly it was actually pretty good. I need to get better with my planning as it wasn't the only thing I forgot to bring (coffee, butter... we learn).
Everyone had a decent sleep and we woke to the rising sun and a beautiful clear day with nice rolling waves to listen to. It was chilly overnight so I ran the diesel heater in the morning to take the chill off while everyone was still in bed.
Breakfast of eggs, toast and cornflakes, and then us boys headed off to Red Rocks nice and early to see the seals before Isaacs swimming lesson at 10am while Kim (being pregnant) shot off home.
A really good tester for how the bus operates with a bunch of people, handy that we didn't really travel any distance. I got to drain the grey water for the first time and realised there are no fresh water hoses on board so will sort for next time.
Overall it was a good weekend, it was good to have my dad with us to spend more time with Isaac.
